In recent decades the number of children in Canada regularly walking and cycling to school has fallen by more than half to just 1 in 4. As a result schools and municipalities struggle to cope with the safety, health and environmental impacts of high traffic volumes in and around school zones.
The Active & Safe Routes to School (ASRTS) program is a response to that trend. Developed by Green Communities Canada, it combines education, encouragement, engineering, enforcement and evaluation measures to improve safety for those students already walking or wheeling to school and to help other families adopt more sustainable transportation for all or part of the journey.
Since 2010, ASRTS has been implemented at more than 30 elementary schools across Ottawa and EnviroCentre is proud to deliver this program to schools in the Ottawa-Carleton District and Ottawa Catholic school boards.
