Ottawa, November 19, 2015 – EnviroCentre received a Gold Bicycle Friendly Business Award during its annual reception from the Share the Road Cycling Coalition on Tuesday evening at the Ottawa Little Theatre.
EnviroCentre is proud to accept the award which recognizes employers that are choosing to invest in cycling as a way to foster healthier and more active workplaces.
“Sustainable transportation and cycling are a part of who we are and what we do,” says Michael Murr, Executive Director of EnviroCentre. “We are thrilled to be awarded a gold given our efforts to encourage a more welcoming atmosphere for bicycling employees, customers, and the community. With our organization’s long history of promoting sustainable transportation in Ottawa, we were also happy to be a local partner for the delivery of the pilot program in Canada’s Capital City.”
The Bicycle Friendly Business program provides recognition, information and support to businesses that are working to make it easier for their employees and customers to ride bikes. Awards are determined based on achievements in each of the 4 “E”s of being bicycle-friendly: engineering (i.e. physical features like bike parking or showers); education (i.e. opportunities to learn about safe cycling or bike maintenance); encouragement (i.e. incentives to get employees or customers on their bikes); and evaluation and planning (i.e. measuring the impact of cycling on your business).
“Share the Road is excited to recognize 34 businesses across Ontario that are choosing to invest in cycling, including EnviroCentre,” said Jamie Stuckless, Executive Director of Share the Road. “We know from research that workplaces that promote cycling experience higher productivity and lower absenteeism, all while improving talent attraction and retention. In short – when a business bikes, the business benefits.”
