Green Business Toolkit

Did you know that local businesses alone could cut an estimated 2,135,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, right here in town?

Want to know how to take action? We’ve broken it down for you in five simple categories, with tips and links to get you where you want to go.

Your Building

Did you know that buildings are responsible for 45% of local carbon emissions, mostly through heating and cooling?

It’s very likely that your biggest carbon impact is your building – and the energy it takes to heat it.  If you want to cut carbon, you can start there.

Here in Ottawa, transportation is responsible for 44% of local carbon emissions – that means our cars, delivery trucks, buses and trains.

If you want to cut carbon, this is your next biggie.

Waste in Operations

Waste is responsible for 8% of Ottawa’s carbon emissions. However, that waste doesn’t account for all the ‘embodied carbon’ in what you buy and waste – including producing, manufacturing or transporting that good.

You can cut carbon here, and you can also avoid other bi-products of waste, including pollution, toxins and plastic in the ocean.

Procurement & Supply Chain

Procurement means starting to think about how much carbon (energy) goes into the products you buy – making them, packaging them, and getting them to you.

As businesses start to consider green procurement, low-carbon practices will grow and carbon emissions will reduce.

Carbon Accounting

Businesses measure everything that matters, so why not measure sustainability too?

Carbon Accounting does just that. It’s a tool that can quantify your organization’s GHG emissions and sources over a one year period, so you can establish a baseline and a reduction target for the future.
