Carbon 613 celebrates their second year on June 6th; members announce first targets to reduce their carbon emissions

May 16, 2017 Ottawa, ON – On June 6, EnviroCentre’s Carbon 613 will host its Annual Evening of Recognition to celebrate the sustainability successes of its business members and launch the Ottawa-wide Climate Quest: an ambitious new plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our region.

Carbon 613 is EnviroCentre’s target-based business sustainability program and part of the Sustainability CoLab network. Carbon 613 provides businesses with concrete tools and knowledge to track and understand their energy use, helping them set targets and stay accountable. From a small home business to a firm’s national headquarters, from the Museum of Nature to Your Credit Union, all Carbon 613 members receive the support they need to become revered environmental leaders in Ottawa. Every year, the program releases an annual progress report on each member which will be available at the June 6 event.

“Our members don’t just talk about sustainability, but actually make changes that reduce their operational footprint. It’s not green washing,” says Program Coordinator, Angela Plant. “The program is creating a network of like-minded businesses that are embedding sustainability into their operations and gaining a competitive advantage.”

Now, in its second year, key members are publically announcing their targets to reduce, as part of a challenge to the business community. The Carbon 613 Climate Quest is the first of its kind in Ottawa. Collectively we are calling on Ottawa businesses to commit to their reductions by 2020 with a collective goal of 50,000 tonnes CO2e committed. That’s more than 11,000 cars off the road for one year, or enough energy to power 5,000 homes. Together we believe Ottawa businesses can play a crucial role in reducing Ottawa’s total greenhouse gas emissions.
