BIKE SHARE REPORT
A missing piece of the local transportation puzzle
Imagine a city where you can get where you need to go, and get there on time, using a wider mix of transportation services. In many cities around the world, bike share is an important part of that mix, but it is one that is missing today in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.
We know that bike share systems are an essential part of any effort to build a thriving, equitable local economy where everyone can live healthier, lower-carbon lives. That’s why EnviroCentre and the Ottawa Climate Action Fund wanted to restart the conversation about bike share in the region.
With 250 bike share systems operating in a wide variety of North American cities and communities, there’s overwhelming evidence that they are an essential piece of a local transportation puzzle.
Successful bike share systems deliver multiple returns to the communities that invest in them. From easier, more affordable mobility for citizens who need it most, to healthier modes of travel. From new or increased ridership for local transit systems, to contributing to the local economy.
This report was commissioned by EnviroCentre and the Ottawa Climate Action Fund with the goal of sharing local opinions on a renewed bike share system and to share current research and best practices from other successful systems.
Bike Share in Numbers
There were 157 million bike share trips in North America in 2022.
Micromobility trips in North America offset approximately 74 million pounds of CO2 (or 34 million kg) by replacing vehicle trips.
About 63% of North American shared micro-mobility users said they used micro-mobility options to connect to transit (NABSA, 2021).
