Bike to Work Week 2010

Bike to Work Week 2010 took place from Monday, June 7 to Friday, June 11 this year and was a huge success. We would like to thank all of the sponsors and supporters who helped make Bike to Work Week the success that it was.

The online pledge resulted in 649 people pledging to cycle and 50,000 km logged. The grand prize was a new bike and other prizes included a helmet, lights, reflectors, gift certificates, and more.

Below is a picture of Dave Harris, winner of the grand prize – the Kunstadt Sport Ottawa Hybrid bike. Dave was invited to the store to select a custom fit bike.

Tuesday, July 8, EnviroCentre and Citizen’s for Safe Cycling were on the NCC Pathway near the Canadian War Museum. The Cycling Celebration Station offered free coffee, resources and giveaways from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Throughout the day over 400 people stopped at the booth and half of them completed a survey conducted by Citizen’s for Safe Cycling. Cyclists were asked to indicate their route on a map and identify hazards. This was part of the Cycling Trends Analysis Survey prepared by Citizen’s for Safe Cycling.

Despite the rain, the BBQ fundraiser and Bruce Timmermans Award Ceremony was well attended on Thursday, June 10th from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm at 156 Bank Street. We raised over $200.00 for the Ottawa Helmets on Kids Initiative. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Special guest, the Ambassador of the Netherlands, the honourable Wilhelmus Julius Petrus GEERTS, presented the awards to the recipients of the Bruce Timmermans Award. He also spoke about cycling advancements in the Netherlands and his ongoing interest to help Ottawa become a leader in cycling facilities.

The Bruce Timmermans Awards recognize outstanding contributions in the encouragement of cycling. Each year an organization is recognized for their contribution that promotes cycling as a viable, environment-friendly mode of transportation. This year’s recipient was re-Cycles, a non-profit bicycle recycling shop, that provides an equipped bicycle shop with volunteers onsite to offer assistance and tips.

People lined up in the rain with their bikes to receive a free bicycle tune up performed by Fosters Sports Centre. Fosters is located at 305 Banks Street and generously donated their time and tools to this event. Visit www.fosterssports.ca to find out more about their products and services.
