Initial three Ottawa communities selected for Sustain Your Community project

Ottawa, November 13, 2014 – Lowertown, Beaverbrook and Constance Bay are the initial partner communities selected to participate in EnviroCentre’s new Sustain Your Community project. Residents of these three communites will have the opportunity to make positive change right where they live on issues related to energy and water conservation, local food and transportation.

The overall aim of the Sustain Your Community project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but on a more local level, it is meant to empower residents in the three distinct urban, suburban and rural communities to design and implement their own sustainability initiatives that result in long-lasting benefits for themselves and their neighbours.

With the project being funded by a three year $276,600 grant by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Government of Ontario, EnviroCentre’s Executive Director and Board Members  proudly accepted a plaque from Minister Meilleur as a gesture to honour the relationship at an informal reception on Thursday, November 13.

”Ontario’s prosperity and quality of life for today and for the future generations depends on what we do now. Engaging Ontarians in initiatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions makes sense. Through support and training, these Trillium funds will help individuals, families and organizations conserve energy, improve environmental health and act more responsibly,” states Madeleine Meilleur, MPP Ottawa-Vanier.

Over the course of the project, Sustain Your Community will collaborate with residents in a total of six Ottawa communities and will draw on EnviroCentre’s strength as Ottawa’s go-to source of practical services and programs that help individuals and organizations conserve energy, improve environmental health and act more sustainably.

“We are grateful for the support received thus far from local community groups and environmental sustainability organizations across the City and are looking forward to working directly with the residents of Lowertown, Beaverbrook and Constance Bay to facilitate the changes they want to see to make their communities sustainable,” exclaims Michael Murr, EnviroCentre’s Executive Director.

EnviroCentre will be hosting initial interactive information sessions in each community to gather feedback from residents on their sustainability priorities. For more information on these sessions, please contact sustain@envirocentre.ca.
