Electricity rates in Ottawa
Ontario now has a rate structure that promotes conservation because the rate increases if your consumption exceeds average levels. During the winter, from November 1 to April 30, you pay 5 cents per kWh for the first 1,000 kWh and 5.9 cents for each additional kWh above that threshold. During the summer, from May 1 to October 31, you pay 5 cents per kWh for the first 600 kWh and 5.9 cents for each additional kWh above that threshold.
Remember that these rates are only for the electricity, not all the other charges now shown on your bill. These other charges, including paying off the $30 billion debt from building those nuclear power plants, can almost double the rate you pay, meaning that average households pay about 10 cents for each of the first 1,000 kwh and almost 12 cents for each additional kwh. For a hint of things to come when you will pay closer to the real costs of elecitricty - including the costs of climate change, check out European power rates.
