* CAN-BIKE cycling education courses
EnviroCentre started delivering CAN-BIKE courses in 2007, when the City stopped funding the organization that did this previously. Over the last two years, EnviroCentre reached over 4,500 people through CAN-BIKE courses, workshops and other events designed for cyclists. Earlier this year the City decided not to renew our own $30,000 per year contract (the same amount being spent on a single reception later this year) and was unable to recruit another delivery agent. All CAN-BIKE courses for 2009 have thus been cancelled.
If you have paid for any CAN-BIKE courses listed in the 2009 Spring/Summer Ottawa Recreation Guide, please contact the community centre directly for a refund.
EnviroCentre regrets this decision because programs like this cannot easily be started, stopped, and then re-started. The work done to build momentum to deliver and participate in this program has once again been lost because the City has not made any long-term commitment to this program.
If you would like to provide feedback on this issue, please contact your local Councillor's office directly. At the 2009 budget consultation, EnviroCentre failed to convince Council to allocate just 0.01% of the roadways capital budget to Transportation Demand Management programs, which explains why CAN-BIKE and other TDM programs are woefully underfunded.
